Exploring the Opportunities of Taiwan as a Platform of Art

Last year, Chinese art has broken a lot of records in the art market. Artistic works of master artists, such as Pei-hung Hsu and Yu-liang Pan, are quite outstanding. Taiwan’s senior maestros, such as Mei-shu Lee, Chi-chun Liao, San-lang Yang, Chung-sheng Lee, Cheng-po Chen, Te-wang Chen, have been having great performance in major auction markets, which means that Asian and Chinese artistic works have attained international attention. Besides, because of the great insight of Asian and Chinese art collectors and the strength of the art market, while introducing Asian artists and their works to the international market, Asian art market also allures a lot of international artists and their works to offer the access to Asian collectors. This year, in the classic art exhibition area, there are more than six exhibitors that participate for the first time in the art fair, and the artistic interchange will increase the freshness of this area.

“Contemporary Art” has become quite prominent in Asian art market in recent years. Hsiao-kang Chang, Min-chun Yueh, and Li-chun Fang, with their tremendous growth in market prices, represent a powerful strength in recent years. The contemporary art exhibition area of Asian art fairs, in terms of vitality of market, has become a zone of “Contemporary Classics” in Asian art market. In the Asia Live exhibition area of Art Taipei 2007, there are more than seven galleries that exhibit for the first time. We can perceive Asian galleries’ great attempt on Taiwan’s art collection market; meanwhile, to identify with “contemporary art” is not only a trend but a practical situation. In the trend of Asian contemporary art in international art market, there are various representative works from Taiwan and China, which will be assembled and presented in Art Taipei 2007.

In the aspect of auction and collection, electronic media art has tremendous growth in recent years. In terms of Taiwan’s international impact of artistic creation, Taiwan’s electronic art is endowed with the objective advantage of technological background, therefore achieving brilliant performance in the quality and quantity of creation and talents and often presenting the star works in international exhibitions and art fairs. Rather than some kind of special art media, in recent years, electronic art contains more technological factors; besides its effects on the transfer and stride of creation groups, the breakthrough and development of technology have provoked more creation of interactive works in the last decade. And the two seemingly conflicting images of accessibility and approachability have been granted new faces. Art Taipei 2007 continues promoting Taiwan’s emerging artists of electronic art, and the design and interaction of multimedia will be full of attraction.

Outra Fair

“Fair” means exposition; it also means “unbiased.” In “Outra Fair”, the concept of “being well-read”, and “fair” is different from an exhibition. “Outra fair” reflects the values on artists themselves. When creating their pieces, they include other artists and become a life community called perceptual partners. Connected by a familiar fashion, they replace the roles of exhibition planners; and at the same time, represent the observation towards Taiwan contemporary art ecology. By these observations, artists display the coordinates and location of themselves in their art careers as well. Moreover, the distinguishing features are new path and method for an attempted breakthrough from existing ecology for Taiwan contemporary artists.
